July 2011
After a rollercoaster 10 days at the
World Eightball Pool Championships, held in Blackpool,
U.K., the Irish men’s 8‐ball pool team have today
defeated England 8‐5 to win the World Pool Championship
title for the second time.
The team got off to a great start in the
league stages of the tournament with wins over France,
Scotland, Northern Ireland and Malta, however they were
were unlucky to lose their next four matches against
Australia, England, Wales and India all in final frame
decider matches, losing 11‐10 each time. Their frame
count however was enough to secure them a place in the
play‐offs where they defeated the West Indies, Northern
Ireland and India to secure a place in the final against
England.
Speaking after the win, John Magee, Team
Manager said “this is a proud and historic moment for
Irish pool. Beating England in the final of the World
Championships is as good as it gets. We are absolutely
delighted and recognize this as a victory for
determination and professionalism. The team have
displayed incredible dedication over the last number of
months in preparation for this year’s World
Championships. All amateur players, they have put in
hours of practice to ensure they were one of the best
prepared teams ever to represent Ireland at World level
.”
